About Finding the Cure
For people with a cancer diagnosis, this spirit of survival, combined with the strength and support of a community of family and friends, is critical. And above all, patients need ready access to the advanced medical treatments that give them the best opportunity to win the fight.
In true Southwest Oklahoma spirit, three community hospitals in three unique communities joined hands to make life better for those who face cancer treatment. Together, Comanche County Memorial Hospital in Lawton, Duncan Regional in Duncan and Jackson County Memorial in Altus combined their resources and expertise to create a new tradition in health care - Southwest Oklahoma Cancer Centers. With the construction of new facilities and expanded cancer treatment centers in each community, patients can now receive the care they need close to home.
The cancer centers have been involved in Cancer Research Trials since June of 1986 and we are proud that our first patient is still living today! Since 1986 we have entered 496 patients in clinical trials. We have enrolled patients in 122 different trials over 26 years.
They have been involved in 8 clinical trials which lead to new FDA approvals, for drugs such as Taxol, Herceptin, and most recently Affinitor!
Trials they participate in are Phase II and Phase III, no Phase 1. Examples of trials we have been involved in are: Breast, Rectal, Gastric, Leukemia, Lymphoma, Lung, Sarcoma, Carcinoid, Prostate, Renal, Ovarian, Myeloma, Melanoma, Pancreas, Brain, Hepatoma, Head and Neck, Uterine and Prostrate Prevention. They also participate in Biospecimen protocols, registries, and quality of life studies.

How does SOS help?
All of the money raised from the Spirit of Survival is donated to the Cancer Centers of Southwest Oklahoma after race expenses are paid. Unlike other charitable organizations, there are no staff or administrative expenses (we have hundreds of volunteers that make this event possible) and a lot of our equipment is donated through sponsors' support. The main expenses are medals, shirts, awards and timing chips. In 2011 alone, the Spirit of Survival donated about $85,000 to the Cancer Centers!
From 2006-2009, the money donated to the Cancer Centers helped build all three locations. Before our combined efforts to localize available treatments for cancer patients, many Southwest Oklahomans have been challenged to fight the battle against cancer in unfamiliar places, hundreds of miles from home and isolated from their friends and family. In many cases, the cost and the resources to travel frequently for treatments have been too great, and patients have resolved to forego potentially life-saving cancer treatment.
Since the completion of the Centers, the funds raised from this event is used for research and clinical trials. They have been able to hire more staff in order to treat more patients and participate in more clinical trials.
