The Mount Scott 5K, Super Kids Marathon and 5K Spirit Walk and Family Run will take place on Saturday, October 4, 2008. Mount Scott 5KSaturday, October 4, 2008 - 7:30 am View Map HereThis once-in-a-lifetime opportunity will change the way you feel about the phrase “King of the Mountain”. This point-to-point course starts at the base of Mount Scott with a short warm-up of .3 miles, running towards your challenge. The following 2.8 miles will take you to the top of Mount Scott, winding and weaving the entire way up. The destination is the third-highest point in Oklahoma with an average incline of 7% and scenic views of the 60,000 acre refuge, Lake Lawtonka and Lake Elmer Thomas the entire way up the mountain.
Mountain MarathonSunday, October 5, 2008 - 8:00 am View Map HereThe Mountain Marathon is a one-of-a-kind marathon that winds through the hidden treasure that is the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge (WMWR). Over 24 miles of the marathon course is on the actual wildlife refuge, a 60,000 acre wildlife preserve teaming with buffalo, longhorn and hundreds of species of wildlife roaming free on the open range. This out-and-back course begins at the historic Medicine Park cobblestone resort and twists through a fraction of the art community which is home to numerous state and nationally-renowned artists. Named for the waters believed to have “healing powers”, Medicine Park is Oklahoma’s oldest resort town and is the gateway to the Wichita Mountains. From there, runners begin their ascent to the Wildlife Refuge and past several famous landmarks to include: Mount Scott, the Holy City of the Wichitas, the WMWR Visitor Center, Quanah Parker Lake & Dam, Camp Doris, and descends to Lost Lake, then back again. While 19 hospitality aid stations providing beverages, food and first aid will line the 26.2-mile course led by official race vehicles, it is important to note that buffalo and longhorn roam free on the open range and are considered dangerous. While these animals are generally docile creatures, all runners must be aware that the race is being run on a national wildlife preserve and animal encounters are possible.

This is a one-of-a-kind half marathon that will provide the serenity of running through the majestic wildlife refuge past scenic lakes and rivers, Mount Scott and the Holy City of the Wichitas. It is important to note that nine hospitality aid stations providing beverages, food and first aid will line the 13.1 mile course led by official race vehicles, however, runners must be aware that buffalo and longhorn roam free on the open range throughout this course, and animal encounters are possible.
Entrants must be 12 years of age or older on race day and have parental consent to participate in the Holy Half Marathon. Parents must be aware of the danger of wild animals roaming free on the open range and that running long distances may be hazardous to young participants. Awards and Prizes

Marathon 5-Member Team ChallengeSunday, October 5, 2008 - 8:00 am View Map HereThis is a fresh new twist to the typical marathon relay. New this year, the 5-Member Marathon Team Challenge offers teams the opportunity to compete together, forging lasting bonds through the enjoyment of the shared running and training experience. Different from the typical Marathon Relay, the team Challenge consists of teams of five members who each run an equal distance of the race, 5.42 miles, for a total of 26.2 miles run. Team members' times will be added together for a final finishing time. Instead of transporting runners to exchange points for a typical relay format, all members of the team will wear their own timing chip, begin the race at 8 am from the Start Line and run out 2.62 miles on the refuge and turn around to cross the Finish Line together in Medicine Park. The greatest benefit of the new format is that runners will avoid waiting for their leg of the race to run and all will be able to run together if they choose. Another benefit is that team members will be among the first to complete their racing experience, allowing them to enjoy the festivities and live entertainment at the finish line as the other finishers cross. Whether you're running as a family team or as part of the corporate challenge, the five-member marathon team challenge will forge a lasting bond. Teams may register in the following categories: corporate/business, family (legal relatives), fire/law enforcement/military, high school, college, male, female and mixed.
Big Rock 10 KSunday, October 5, 2008 - 8:30 am View Map HereStarting in the heart of Medicine Park, this race is the only course that does not travel onto the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, but has perhaps the best of all races combined. Running one mile through the artist’s community past the Winery of the Wichitas and a scenic lakeside view of Mount Scott, this course travels another 1 ˝ miles around Lake Lawtonka. At approximately 3 miles, a steep and winding incline continues for about ˝ mile. At the top of Big Rock Mountain Estates is a scenic mountain vista lined with Colorado-style timber homes where a steep descent takes you back to the other side of Medicine Park to the roar of the Finish Line.
Super Kid’s MarathonSaturday, October 4, 2008 - 11:00 am![]() The Kids Marathon is for all kids through 12 years of age. At a time when childhood obesity is at an all-time high, this event gives children an opportunity to engage in the world of physical fitness and enjoy the thrill and excitement of the finish line while experiencing the satisfaction of completing a difficult task. Each child logs 25 miles in their Spirit of Survival Kid’s Marathon Log Book by having a parent or teacher sign for each mile run. On the day of the Marathon the kids will run the final 1.2 miles to the official marathon finish line. This event is a wonderful way to encourage kids that they can accomplish anything and learn the value of a life of health and fitness. Lauren NelsonMiss America 2007, Honorary Chairperson

Super Kids Marathon T-Shirt Design and Coloring Book Art
The artist who created the Inaugural Super Kids Marathon t-shirt design is no stranger to anyone. If you live in America, you may not recognize her name, but you most definitely will recognize her work. She is none other than Muriel Fahrion, or most known as the creator of Strawberry Shortcake and the Care Bears. Now, a resident of Medicine Park, Muriel lends her talents to projects close to her heart. When Muriel learned of plans to start the first Super Kids Marathon to take place at the Spirit of Survival Marathon, she quietly offered her skills to make the event more fun and successful. “Scamper” is the product of her creative genius—a perfect representation of an active and healthy resident on the plains of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.

This event is the exclamation point reminding us what the Spirit of Survival is all about. It begins at the conclusion of the Super Kid's Marathon and gives participants an opportunity to honor cancer survivors as they display their determination to prevail over cancer and will give others the opportunity to show their support by walking in honor or in memory of victims of this disease. This 5K also allows children and families to experience the excitement of the big race amongst the roar of a crowd and the allure of a Finish Line. This is one way to encourage families to experience and nurture an attitude of health and fitness to last a lifetime.
